High Holidays

The Jewish year begins in the fall with the celebration of the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The High Holidays signify the beginning of the Jewish calendar year, a time when we take stock of our lives, ask forgiveness for the sins we have committed, and pray for a good year to come.

Rosh Hashanah: Rosh Hashanah (“Head of the Year”) is the official Jewish New Year Day on which we look back over the year just passed and forward to the year to come. We blow the ram’s horn (Shofar) in the synagogue to announce the coming of the new year in a memorable way.

Yom Kippur: Yom Kippur (“Day of Atonement) begins at sunset with the Kol Nidre evening service and continues into the next day until nightfall, lasting about 25 hours. Many of us fast throughout the day and attend synagogue for most of the day.

Ten Days of Repentance: We hold that, while judgment of each person is pronounced on Rosh Hashanah, it is not made absolute until Yom Kippur. The Ten Days are therefore an opportunity to mend our ways in order to receive a favorable judgment.

Tickets: We observe the High Holidays in the Temple Beth Tikvah sanctuary. We issue tickets to all members prior to the Rosh Hashanah (see the Events calendar for the date for the current year). Members can request guest tickets by calling the temple office at (973) 595-6565.

Temple Beth Tikvah invites non-members to join its congregants with complimentary tickets for High Holiday Services on the Second Day of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur afternoon and Yizkor beginning at 3:30 p.m. A ticket for each person is required. You can request your complimentary ticket via email.

Tot Shabbat

Tot Shabbat services are designed especially for children ages newborn through 8 years old and their parents and grandparents.

Rabbi Beal leads Tot Shabbat services with stories, songs, parades and prayers that get your young children excited about going to Temple! A special Children’s Oneg Shabbat follow Tot Shabbat where children receive juice, cookies, toys, puzzles, coloring, and games. Tot Shabbat services are perfect for small children and their families.
